On 6 February 2023, a 7.8 earthquake struck southern and central Turkey and northern and western Syria. The epicenter was 32 km (20 mi) west–northwest of Gaziantep at 04:17 TRT (01:17 UTC). The earthquake had a maximum Mercalli intensity of XI (Extreme). It was followed by a Mw  7.7 earthquake nine hours later, centered 95 km (59 mi) to the north-northeast from the first, in Kahramanmaraş Province. There was widespread damage and tens of thousands of fatalities.

Here are some tips for earthquake preparedness:

Create an emergency kit: Prepare an emergency kit that includes food, water, first aid supplies, flashlights, and other essential items that can sustain you and your family for at least 72 hours.

Secure your home: Secure heavy objects, such as bookcases and cabinets, to walls and ensure that tall furniture, such as dressers and armoires, are anchored. Identify and fix potential hazards in your home, such as loose roof tiles or unreinforced masonry.

Develop an evacuation plan: Identify evacuation routes and practice how to evacuate quickly and safely. Have a plan for meeting up with family members after an earthquake.

Stay informed: Stay informed about earthquake risks in your area and monitor local news and emergency alerts. Sign up for community warning systems and know how to access reliable sources of information.

Participate in drills and exercises: Participate in earthquake drills and exercises to practice your response and improve your preparedness.

Learn basic first aid: Learn basic first aid skills, including how to provide CPR and treat injuries, so that you can help yourself and others in the event of an earthquake.

Insure your property: Purchase insurance for your home and belongings to protect yourself financially in the event of earthquake damage.
